The Economist conference, entitled “Leadership strategy for stability, progress and prosperity in Europe”, opened here Monday and is set to conclude Tuesday.
According to the organisers, the summit’s primary objective is to show how the Cypriot Presidency can contribute to the fulfillment of Europe’s visions and scopes. Conference sessions shall focus on sustainable development, stabilisation of the economy, economic governance, employment issues, poverty and social exclusion, tackling of climate change, exploration of the energy landscape as well as every subject related to Europe’s growth and prosperity.
The meeting is under the auspices of Cyprus EU Presidency and is co-organized with the European Parliament office and the European Commission Presentation in Cyprus.
Delegates will be welcomed by Tasos Georgiou, Head of the European Parliament Office in Cyprus and George Markopouliotis, Head of European Commission Presentation in Cyprus. Andreas Mavroyiannis, Deputy Minister to the President for European Affairs, will give a keynote address on “The new multi-annual financial framework 2014-2020”.
During the morning session, speeches on Cyprus’ role in the EU Presidency will be given by Yiannakis Omirou, President of the House of Representatives, Nicos Anastasiades, President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), Andros Kyprianou, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Progressive Party for the Working People (AKEL) and Marios Garoyian, President of the Democratic Party (DIKO).
Today, guest of honour and keynote speaker will be the US Ambassador to the European Union, William Kennard. “Strengthening EU’s ties with its neighbours during the Cyprus Presidency” is the title of a speech by Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, in the afternoon session while Vladimir Chizhov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the European Union will speak about Russia’s relations with Europe.
